A highly respected American commentator noted with regret in 1999 that those nineteenth century experts writing about many celebrated makers, contemporary to them, did not then avail themselves of the opportunity to sift truth from myth.  this has been to the obvious disadvantage of players and makers ever since.
Books on W. E.  Hill & Sons
The following books should prevent similar confusion arising over the lives and work of the the craftsmen at W. E.  Hill & Sons who , throughout much of the twentieth century, contributed to earning that firm and workshop an unrivalled world-wide reputation.
Perhaps even more than our previous publication "Pajeot" by Sydny Bowdon, there is - with this book on W. E.  Hill & Sons -  an opportunity to share with fellow enthusiasts some results of continuing research into interesting, sometimes hitherto obscure, aspects of instrument and bowmaking history and tradition.
"W. E.  Hill & Sons (1880-1992): A Tribute" (published 1997)
This book focuses in particular on the Hill bowmakers, their lives, their individual marks and characteristics of work which are an aid to recognition.....
Amongst the subject matters covered in great detail are:  The instrument makers of the original Hill family; the bow makers of the Tubbs family; Samuel Allen - the first W. E.  Hill & Sons bow maker; the Bazin connection to early Hill bow making and those "hybrids" that later so puzzled W. C. Retford; the bow makers of W. E. Hill & Sons and methods of working, and the instrument makers of W. E. Hill & Sons.  For the first time it will be possible for the potential purchaser of most W. E. Hill & Sons instruments made between 1880 and 1940 to determine exactly who made their instrument. A Detailed completed list of W. E.  Hill& Sons bow makers is also included (1880-1992), which corrects errors or lack of clarity noted in similar lists published or circulated elsewhere in the past.
The interested player or collector will also find noted within these covers individual quirks of making that should enable them to confirm identify (or otherwise) for important bow makers such as Francois Nicolas Voirin, James Tubbs and Nicolaus Kittel.  Arthur Bultitude's frank thoughts in the until recently contentious issue surrounding the "existence" of Francois Tourte's brother - Tourte L'aine, are also included...
